Apopka

Apopka Florida is a city located just 12 miles northwest of downtown Orlando. The city located in Orange County, Florida is home to over 42,000 people and encompasses an area of about 24 square miles.  In my humble opinion, Apopka has some of the best mexican food around,  I know this is an old statistic, as of 2009, the median price for a home or condo in Apopka was around $201,000. A great thing about Apopka High School is that it has a medical magnet program, which allows Apopka high school students to participate in internships and dual enrollment. The unusual name of the city comes from an Indian word meaning “Potato eating place.” Early Apopka was referred to by many different titles including the “Indoor Foliage Capital of the World”, “The Fern City” and also sometimes referred to as “The Lodge”.

The city has many beautiful parks and bike/walking trails, Apopka’s best trail is called West Orange Trail, 22 miles of biking, walking, rollerblading, you name it. Apopka is also home to Rock Springs Park, known for it’s natural spring for tubing, snorkeling, and swimming. But the best park in Apopka is Wekiwa Springs State Park, which offers camping, hiking, biking, canoeing, fishing, horse trails (actually, this is one of central Florida’s best state parks!). In 1912 Apopka became well known as one of the largest growers of ferns in the country. This led to the area being referred to as “The Fern City”. As more tropical plants were grown in the area the city later adopted the nickname the “Indoor Foliage Capital of the World”.
